4. Costs in the students canteen
1.1 How do I arrive to Faro from Lisbon or Porto?
There are 3 airports where you can arrive in Portugal: Lisbon, Porto and Faro. You can continue your trip to faro by plane, by bus or by train.

1.2 How do I go from Faro airport to Faro?
From Faro Airport, there is a bus number 14 or 16 which will take you to Faro with price around 2 euros. Also, you can use a taxi service; the approximate price is 12-15 euros.
2.1 How is condition and facilities in the student Residence?
The University of Algarve has several student residences located both in downtown Faro and Campus Gambelas. The condition and facilities are dependent on the residences. All of them are double rooms, with shared living room, kitchen, bath room, wash room. The number of students who share these facilities depends on the residence. In most cases, free wireless internet is available in the residence, and TV is equipped in the living room.
Bed sheets, blanket, pillow and towels are provided. Rooms are cleaned at end of the week which also includes changing of the sheets.
In the kitchen, you can find microwave, fridges and cooking stoves.
In case of private apartments, most of them are single room with shared living room, kitchen. Some of them provide internet access. But in most cases, you have to prepare bed sheet, blanket, pillow and towel by yourself.
2.2 How is the cost for accommodation?
For student residences, they charge 115 Euros monthly. In private apartments, it is generally high, but normally ranges from 130 to 250 Euros. Mobility office has the list of apartments or you can find advertisement nearby shopping malls (Pingo doce).
3.1 How is Living expense in Faro?
Living in Portugal is much cheaper than most of other European countries however this will depend on your lifestyle.
3.2 How much money do I need to have with me when I arrive?
You will receive your first scholarship on September; normally it is 24th of September. However, you will need money to live before this date. Also there can be some delays due to formal procedures in the beginning. So, try to bring some money with you for the first month.
4. Costs in the students canteen
4.1 What is the cost in the University canteen?
A normal meal in the canteen costs 2.35 - 5 Euros. Also there are a lot of cafeterias on Campus where you can find café, tea, sandwiches, etc.
5.1 How is weather in Faro?
Weather in Faro is generally sunny and nice. There is no rain most of the time. In summer, temperature ranges from 20 to 38 degrees and in winter from 5 to 20 degrees.
5.2 How is the winter time in Faro, which clothes will I need?
During the winter time you will need good waterproof jacket and shoes, because it rains a lot starting from the end of October. Also note, that there is no Central Heating and houses are cold during the winter, you will have to buy electric heater (price: from 10 euros).
6.1 How can I open my bank account?
In the University of Algarve, the mobility office helps to apply for a new bank account. With this bank book, you can apply for a card (Debit card) for payment in supermarket, shops, etc. However, non- Europeans cannot have credit card and thus payment online (for flight, hostel, etc) could be a problem if you do not have a credit card with you.
6.2 How can I buy services via internet with the debit card?
You can open virtual credit card (MBnet), it’s easy to do in nearest cash machine (Multibanco) clicking Mbnet service button or you can consult the bank staff. More information can be found on-line https://www.mbnet.pt
7.1 Do people speak English?
Around the University of Algarve most students understand and speak English as you can find a lot of Erasmus students around. In the street people mainly speak Portuguese. But most of them are willing to help if you need even they cannot understand fully. Also, Faro is a very touristic town, so in the supermarkets, shops and restaurants people normally understand English.
8. Transportation
8.1 How is the transportation within the city?
As most students are living downtown Faro, you need to transport from downtown to Gambelas to have classes every day. In this case, you can apply for a bus card at the bus terminal (Avenida, Eva Bus Station). With a declaration or student card from the university, you can get bus card. You will have to charge it monthly. If you are under 25 years, you can get the student bus card URBANAS-F1 with a price around 12 Euros a month, but you cannot use it to go to Faro Beach or Airport. For people older than 25 years old, the monthly price will be higher, but with possibility to use all the destinations. Additional information will be provided to you in the Mobility office or in the Eva Bus Station.
9.1 Which Mobile Operator I would better use?
There are several operators to provide mobile services: Vodafone, TMN, UZO. All the operators provide special services for students; you can buy your number with special student tariff plan in one of the offices. You will need to provide copy of your ID and confirmation that you are a student of UALG. Note, that students with the same tariff plan do not pay for calls and text messages among each other.
10.1 How can I use my Insurance in case of emergency?
You will be provided with insurance for the duration of your study. In the event of an emergency, you should dial 112, the national emergency number. This service is free of charge and your call can be answered in English, Portuguese or French. You can also go to every hospital Emergency Room and your insurance will cover all expenses. However, the best way is to call to the insurance company and tell them the situation. They will inform you about further actions.
10.2 How can I use my insurance in case I need to set an appointment with a doctor?
In this case you can call your insurance and they will organize appointment for you. They will also provide guarantee of payment to the hospital and inform you about the time you can visit the doctor.
